In the US, 49.6% of people over the age of 65 are diagnosed with arthritis; and this statistic is only set to rise. Joint-related issues, particularly with the elderly, are highly prevalent - yet it only takes a simple lifestyle change or two for the relief of pain, symptoms and improved mental well-being. But what is easy to incorporate into our daily routines and gives aging joints the exercise they need, whilst being non-intensive and easy to get into? Yoga. Yes, yoga. The practice is not just limited to new-age lovers and young health addicts; people from all walks of life and age ranges are now practicing yoga in their own individualized ways. The simple nature of yoga means that you can give those problem joints the workout that they need to stay limber even if you don't consider yourself to be the most active or sporty person out there.

Benefits for those with joint problems

We have to take care of our aging joints in particular, as they may not age as gracefully as the rest of us do! But by simply incorporating a bit of yoga in the mornings, they'll be given the basic maintenance they need. The primary and most important benefit of yoga is the stretching of those muscles and joints. Starting the day with a short session of yoga will get your body prepped for the day ahead, no matter what level of exertion you put out. Whether it's a morning jog or even a banal task like going grocery shopping; any sort of movement for the rest of the day will put a strain on your joints if not properly stretched beforehand.

How to start practicing yoga for the inexperienced

In terms of what you'll need, some breathable work-out clothing and a good yoga mat are all that's required. After that, the rest is up to you. To make sure you're practicing safe yoga moves and stretches, it would be best to do some research by looking up online yoga tutorials or finding a local yoga class for beginners. Remember, yoga is meant to be a relaxing and accessible practice, so don't feel pressured to pay for classes if you're not able to - as long as you do it safely, yoga at home is perfectly normal and may even be more comfortable for you. Start with the basics, don't strain your joints and muscles beyond their limits, and remember to keep a steady breathing pattern.

Once you get into the groove of practicing yoga regularly, your joints will soon be thanking you when you begin to feel the benefits. Feeling limber and more mobile, less fatigued and also more positive mentally will prove that you're not as old as your aging joints tell you! Now get your mat, set aside some time, and start working out those problem areas.
